Participant Feedback

From Families in Penang

TM

Tan May Lin

George Town, Penang

"We attended the Conversation Workshop after months of going in circles about some household decisions. The prompt deck did not solve anything on its own, but it gave us a structure that we keep coming back to. It is now on the kitchen table."

Attended: Conversation Workshop — April 2025

Rajan Krishnan

Pulau Tikus, Penang

"The Binder Session was practical and well-paced. We came in with a shoebox situation — documents everywhere — and left with a folder that actually made sense. My wife and I both knew where things were by the end of the afternoon. The session did not stray into advice we were not looking for, which I appreciated."

Attended: Binder Session — March 2025

Nurul Khairiyah

Butterworth, Penang

"I brought my parents to the Records Programme because we could not agree on how to handle the family paperwork. Three sessions over five weeks was the right pace — we had time to try things between meetings. The handbook at the end is genuinely useful."

Attended: Records Programme — Feb–April 2025

Chong Wei Ling

Air Itam, Penang

"Small group, calm room, no rushed feeling. That was my main impression of the Conversation Workshop. The facilitator did not push any particular conclusions — just helped us find a way to talk that was a bit less circular than what we had been doing on our own."

Attended: Conversation Workshop — May 2025

Ahmad Badri

Balik Pulau, Penang

"The Binder Session was straightforward. The facilitator walked us through the different record categories clearly and we made our own decisions about the structure. I would have liked slightly more time on the digital backup section, but we did cover the main ground."

Attended: Binder Session — April 2025

Loh Yee Shan

Bayan Lepas, Penang

"We completed the full Records Programme and it was worth the time. By the third session we had a clear picture of where everything lived, a scanning checklist we had actually started working through, and a handbook we could hand to anyone in the family. The pace suited us well."

Attended: Records Programme — Jan–March 2025

Case Studies

Three Household Journeys

Case Study 01 — Conversation Workshop

A Family Returning to Regular Household Meetings

Challenge

A household of four adults — two parents, two adult children — had not held a formal household conversation in several years. Decisions were made individually and disagreements arose regularly from lack of shared information.

Session

The family attended the Conversation Workshop together. The session introduced a structured format for household discussions, with the prompt deck used to practise listening and summarising exercises as a group of four.

Result

Within six weeks of the session, the family had held two structured household meetings using the prompt deck. Both parents reported that conversations felt less like arguments. One adult child began attending meetings they had previously avoided.

"We were surprised at how much the structure helped. We did not change what we were talking about — just how we talked about it." — Tan May Lin

Case Study 02 — Binder Session

Getting a Decade of Paperwork Into One Usable Folder

Challenge

A couple in their 50s had accumulated a decade's worth of household documents across multiple drawers, envelopes, and an old filing cabinet. Neither knew exactly what they had or where the more important records were kept.

Session

The Binder Session walked them through a record category overview and helped them decide on a tab structure suited to their household. They built the working draft binder during the session itself.

Result

The couple left with a binder covering 9 record categories and a cover sheet showing where each category lives. One month later they reported that they had since found three documents they had not known they still had.

"In one afternoon we did something I had been putting off for years. The structure made it possible." — Rajan Krishnan

Case Study 03 — Records Programme

An Intergenerational Household Reorganising Shared Records

Challenge

Three generations living under one roof — grandparents, parents, and adult grandchildren — had records dispersed between family members with no shared reference point. Important documents had been misplaced during a recent house move.

Programme

The family completed the three-session Records Programme over five weeks. Sessions covered full inventory, labelling, a scanning checklist, and family-meeting agenda templates, with independent tasks between sessions.

Result

By the final session, the household had a complete record inventory, a printed handbook all three generations had reviewed, and a scanning checklist showing roughly 60% of priority documents already backed up digitally.

"The pacing really made the difference. We needed time between sessions to do the actual work." — Nurul Khairiyah
